WOOD FENCE REPAIRS: RAILS, POST, GATE, PANELS, DENVER COL

Wood Fence Repairs in Denver are an ongoing process, so we asked some of our fence contractors that work with different types of fences, to explain briefly some common repairs for all types of fences. Today we’re going to talk about wood fences, because wood fences don’t always have to be replaced just because there are sections of rotten fence.

Fence rail repairs: fence rails that have become loose can usually be saved, if the joints are not to rotten with a 2x4 stud or galvanized steel T braces, which are available at any of the fence companies at www.abc123.com that sell wood fence materials, just make sure you apply a wood preservative to all areas of the fence your repairing, and replacing to prevent further damage to the fence from rotting.

Fence Post repairs: all fence post will begin to wobble sooner or later, if the fence post is rotting or broken, you can repair it with 2x4 splints attached to each side of the post that go below the frost line in Denver, and are at least a foot above the ground on each side, and then drill some holes in two places and use galvanized bolts to hold them together. Note: make sure you use pressure treated 2x4’s or a good grade of cedar. If the post is broken off at ground level it will be necessary to replace the entire post, which will involve digging a new post hole, and setting a new post in concrete, and if you don’t want to have to dig up the old concrete where the post has broken off, simply move over 8 inches and dig a new hole, and put in a new post if possible. This will require some adjustments to the fence panels but some people would rather do this than dig!

Fence Gate repairs: if the gate is hard to close or won’t close, check to see if the hinges are bent; if this is the problem then replace the hinge with a larger hinge. Many times the problem is loose screws that you’ll need to replace by filling the old holes with wood dowels and glue, and then re-drill the holes and use larger screws; once again use galvanized screws.

Repair sections of fence: many times is the easiest thing to do is simply replace the broken section of fence, or you can repair small breaks in the wood fence panels with a new panel that matches your fence, that’s available at most fence companies in Denver, and make sure to use 10d galvanized nails.

Fence panel repairs: fence panels that are loose or rotten can usually be repaired, if the wood isn’t to rotten; you can buy a new panel, or replace sections of the panel in most cases; if this is the case then use 2x4 pressure treated wood or galvanized T braces, and once again make sure you coat all areas with a good quality wood preservative
